7billionideas and The Lions Charity were this week delighted to host the finals of the #ROAR2018 Competition in the beautiful setting of Wakehurst House in West Sussex. A total of 65 children took part in the event, each of them working in small teams to come up with an idea to change the world. The competition is the culmination of many weeks’ work from over 10,000 children in 65 schools across the south east.
The winning idea, the ‘Lost Track’ was the brainchild of a group of friends from Pennthorpe School in Surrey. It involves a wristband that is connected to an app, which tracks children should they become estranged from parents or teachers on a trip out. The judges loved its ingenuity and use of technology. They were also very impressed with the group’s creativity in designing their poster and musical jingle, sang and played by Jem on guitar. Judge Charlie Limm from 7BillionIdeas said: ‘It’s been really inspiring to see weeks of work flourish into such impressive ideas and presentations. It was a very tough decision as all the children were so passionate about their fantastic ideas’.
#ROAR2018 is designed to give a platform for our innovators and entrepreneurs of the future. Since its inception last year, the competition has generated hundreds of world changing ideas linked to multiple topics, including politics, health, sport and sustainability. Fellow judge, Lions President, David Skinner commented: ‘It has been a great privilege for the Lions Clubs to once again work with 7billionideas to produce a fantastic competition. Together our innovative competition saw an estimated 10,000 children from Surrey and Sussex engaging fully with their creative ideas. We were so impressed with the finalists’ energy and enthusiasm and with the support of their teachers too. Our Lions Clubs look forward to extending our youth work through our successful collaboration with 7billionIdeas in 2019 so we might reach out to even more children across the country’.
All finalists were presented with medals and certificates. The winners will also see their idea be turned into a lovely, colour-illustrated story book, a life-long memento of their success as well as an inspiration to continue to think big and dream big.
